Breaking News: Punjab Government Announces Ambitious Agriculture Tube Well Solarization Project on August 5, 2024
On August 5, 2024, the Punjab government announced an ambitious project to solarize agricultural tube wells across the province. The initiative, led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, aims to alleviate energy costs for farmers and promote sustainable agricultural practices.
The project is divided into two phases. In the first phase, 7,000 tube wells will be converted to solar energy, followed by an additional 10,000 tube wells in the second phase, which will involve collaboration with the federal government. Farmers who own up to 25 acres will be eligible to participate, covering only 33% of the solarization costs, while the government will subsidize the remaining 67%.
This initiative is expected to drastically reduce the cost of irrigation for farmers. Currently, operating a tube well with diesel costs about Rs3,000 per acre, and using electricity costs around Rs1,500 per acre. In contrast, solar energy will reduce this cost to just Rs50 per acre. This substantial reduction in operational costs is anticipated to boost the economic viability of farming in the region.
In addition to the solarization project, the Punjab government is also preparing a special package for vegetable farmers to ensure a sustainable supply of essential vegetables like tomatoes and onions.
The project, valued at Rs12 billion, is part of the broader “Transforming Punjab Agriculture” program and is expected to significantly impact the agricultural landscape by promoting eco-friendly practices and reducing the overall production costs for farmers.
